SLEEPY EYE – The SouthPoint Financial Credit Union received an award from the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN).
The Credit Union is the recipient of a 2021 Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award.
The Louise Herring Award recognizes credit unions that demonstrate extraordinary practical application of the principles of the movement in service of their members. SouthPoint was honored for the creation of its Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The ACC was formed with the idea that as SouthPoint grows and evolves, the organization recognizes that an important part of its mission is to hear and serve members of the communities it serves, while fostering inclusion. in expanding marketing to meet member needs where strategically possible. The committee meets quarterly with an advisory group within SouthPoint. Each meeting consists of an internal SouthPoint team providing an update to the CAC on the products and services offered by the credit union, as well as updates within each of SouthPoint’s seven branch communities. CAC members share their ideas and provide useful feedback to SouthPoint.
The award is named in honor of Louise Herring, an active supporter, organizer and champion of credit unions. She was the Ohio delegate to the 1934 National Conference of Credit Unions in Estes Park, Colorado, where she signed the original constitution for a national association of credit unions. Herring believed that credit unions should work in a practical way to improve people’s lives. She saw the credit union as more than just a financial institution. In his own words, “The goal of the credit union is to reform the financial system, so that everyone can have their place in the sun. “
SouthPoint’s winning entry Louise Herring will advance to the national competition, where she will compete with financial education projects from credit unions in other states.
